This year our trip is to the mostly unexplored (by us) regions of New England. We have been through this area numerous times since we moved here 30 years ago. It has always been on a week or two trip, never the kind of through trip we have been doing the past few years.
Due to my accepting a last minute teaching assignment that ran until June 30, and a health issue, this trip also will really be planned on a daily basis.
Let’s start with our new RV and truck. Those of you with us last summer probably read between the lines and figured when we stopped back at Elkhart and did more trailer plant tours that we’d soon have a new trailer. We bought a 32’ Carriage Cameo, and a Chevy 2500HD Diesel to pull it.
First, a short detour to this winter, Brrr. It is a full timers 5th wheel, set up for winter and summer, so we took it to Washington DC between Christmas and New Years for the shakedown cruise. We left after a nasty Christmas day storm, and ran into terrible post-Christmas traffic in NJ.But we got there and had a wonderful time. We toured Mount Vernon, and Monticello .
For this trip we set off on July 3rd for the White Mountains. We settled for a campsite on the fringe of the park, got a great site due to a no-show, and headed off to the Squam Lake nature center on the 4th. It’s a wonderfully done cross between a Zoo and a science center. They have a beautiful natural walk through the forest with pavilions to stop and see native animals in their real setting, naturalist talks on different animals, and a very nice flower garden in bloom. We saw Eric and the Great Horned owl during a talk.
We were going to try to make it up to Lincoln for the 4th Parade, but the nature center called us to stay. That evening we went up there for their firework show which takes place on their section of the Kancamangus highway about ¼ mile long. People just found a spot to park, and set up their chairs and blankets and watched . There were smaller “private” shows taking place before and after.
On the 5th we moved the trailer up to a park in Lincoln, where we have a very nice site. We’ll stay here till the weekend when we’ll move down to Hillsborough for a balloon fly weekend. We’ll probably head over to Vermont work our way north for awhile head back around through Northern NH, hit the eastern side of the White Mtns. then head to Maine sometime end of July, early August. If you’ve got a favorite place that is off the beaten path, small town festival, or a plant tour we can talk our way into, send it to us, at outofdoors@comcast.net
